Studying for TOEFL: How Do I Prepare for the Exam?

Studying is a fun activity. Do you agree or disagree?

For students, studying is a burden they have to carry around for about 14 years. It is a part of being a student and every student has to deal with. Furthermore, studying is not only limited to students but also to working professionals as well. Some study as part of their master’s or doctorate degree. While some study to take an English proficiency examination like the TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

The TOEFL is an English proficiency examination taken by working professionals and even students for employment and academic purposes respectively. The TOEFL is a computer-based examination that takes about four and a half hours to complete. The test will gauge an individual’s ability in understanding the English language in its four core areas – speaking, listening, reading and writing. Furthermore, the topics are of academic content; hence, preparation for the exam is highly needed. How can one prepare for the TOEFL examination?

1. Read on various academic topics
Like mentioned earlier, the topics in the TOEFL exam are of academic content. Topics can be from subjects like anthropology, geology, biology, history, music, sociology and psychology. Reading textbooks on these topics will help the candidate get knowledge and even vocabulary used in these specific topics.

2. Watch/Listen to conversations in English
There are lot of American shows and TV series on TV today. Watching these will practice the candidate in getting familiar with English conversations and pronunciation of words. Candidates can practice by taking down notes on idioms or English expressions that seem unfamiliar to them.

3. Enrol in a TOEFL review center
In TOEFL review centers, course programs are designed to build, develop and improve the candidate’s English skills. They will be trained on how to choose the right answers for the reading and listening, create effective responses for the speaking, and write effective essays for the writing section. TOEFL coaches will delicately explain the concepts and teach strategies that will make the TOEFL easier and simpler.

Reviewing for the TOEFL exam should be done by its test takers. Self-studying can also be practiced; however, the level of improvement on one’s English skills is low compared of having training with TOEFL coaches. Though reviewing in a TOEFL review center can be a little pricey, the amount of knowledge together with the techniques and strategy needed for the exam is incomparable.
