IELTS Requirement in Australian Visas 457 and 186

One popular tourist destination for Filipinos is Australia. Everybody wants to take a selfie in the Sydney Opera House or take a glimpse of the kangaroos and koalas. Though Australia can be a pretty expensive trip, Filipinos are still up for visiting the country. Not only Australia is popular for this tourist spots and destinations but also it has become a country where employment is high and skilled work is in-demand.

Australia has a number of visas where Filipinos can apply for. These visas have different requirements and eligibility of which Filipinos have to know. Among the many visas, Australian Visas 457 and 186 are most applied for.

Australia 457 is also known as Temporary Work (Skill) visa. This visa lets a skilled worker travel to Australia to work in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor for four years. Application for this type of visa can be done in or outside Australia. This visa will allow a person to work in Australia for four years, bring their family to work or study in Australia and travel in and out of the country as much as possible. Candidates for this visa should check that their employer must be an approved sponsor and has nominated them for a position. Among the many requirements in this type of visa, one must obtain an IELTS or International English Language Testing System exam score of at least 5 in all parts of the examination – speaking, reading, listening and writing.

On the other hand, Australian Visa 186 is Employer Nomination Scheme. This is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers. It allows any visa holder to work in Australia under any of these streams: the Temporary Residence Transition stream, the Direct Entry stream, and the Agreement stream. Unlike 457 visa, 186 visa has two-step process: a nomination from an Australian employer and an application under the streams mentioned above. For the IELTS score, the Temporary Residence Transition stream requires an IELTS score minimum of 5 in all components. For the Direct Entry stream, a score not less than 6 is needed. For the Agreement stream, the score is stated in the labour agreement.

The important thing for any applicant is to get a nomination from an employer. Having this makes the application faster and easier. In addition, take the IELTS test aiming for more than the desired score. Have a checklist of all the requirements needed. Best of all, inquire to an immigration adviser to which visa will work best for you. For more information, visit and for more information.

How to Improve Your IELTS Score in Five Ways

“I have taken the IELTS twice and I still cannot get my target score, what should I do?”

It is a dilemma to some people to hit their target scores in the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System. This examination poses a great importance as it is a requirement to most companies and academic institutions overseas. As Filipinos, this exam should be a little bit easier. However, there are some skills and techniques one must further improve to reach their target scores. Failing to get the target scores means the candidate has to retake the examination, pay the necessary fees again, and undergo strenuous reviews.

If you are a candidate for the IELTS exam, here are a few tips on how you can improve your scores to successfully hit your target.

1. Improve your vocabulary.
The vocabulary use in the exam is not only limited in the reading section. A good foundation with words is essential for the exam. In the speaking part, you will be able to express yourself better with the use of right words and appropriate idiomatic expressions. In addition, in writing, you can play with words to better describe your ideas. Vocabulary can be improved through reading different reading materials.
2. Watch English movies and drama series.
Learning should be fun and entertaining as well. Through movies, you will be able to learn how to use words in conversations correctly. Some words are appropriate in an informal conversation whilst some are not used in formal dialogues. Further, learners will be able to observe how people handle conversations.
3. Listen to different English accents
The IELTS test has different accents used such as American English, British English and Australian English accents. Listening to samples of these accents help the candidate to be familiar with how certain words are pronounced and given emphasis on sentences. Further, knowledge in such accents will make it easier for the candidate to understand conversations in the listening part of the exam.
4. Use English as often as possible.
When there is an opportunity to use the language, use it. Do not hesitate. Take advantage of situations wherein you can use English like ordering in a restaurant or talking with friends. This is a good avenue to build your confidence in using English in your day-to-day activities.
5. Review with coaches.
Coaches know how to make your strengths greater and turn your weaknesses to your advantage. They give out feedbacks that will help the candidate improve his or her skills. Studying with them is exposing the candidates to more avenues in increasing their fluency and improving their potential in getting the target score.

These are five easy steps but effective in improving one’s score for the IELTS test.

Points System for Canada Immigration Applications

Applying for a visa in a country like Australia needs a lot of requirements to be presented. It is for this reason that most Filipinos process their applications as early as possible to be able to get the approval of their visas before they leave the country. In addition, Australia is also known for its point system for visa applications. Not only Australia uses this system, but also Canada.

Canada uses the point system to screen their visa applicants. It is a good advantage so as applicants are those who are qualified and only eligible can be granted certain visas. Here is what you should know about Canada’s Point System on Immigration Applications.

• A maximum of 25 points is given on education. Applicants will be asked to check the highest level of education they have attained. 25 points is given to those who have earned a PhD, Master’s or and at least 17 years of full-time study. Completion of Secondary School or High school gets a score of 5.
• A maximum of 24 points is given to those who are very fluent in both English and French – as these two languages are commonly spoken in Canada. The points given will be determined based on your fluency in reading, listening, writing and speaking of the mentioned languages.
• Work experience is also included. A maximum of 21 points is given to those who have more than four years work experience.
• Age matters. 10 points is awarded to those who are between 21 to 49. Ages below 16 and above 54 gets 0.
• Arranged employment is when you are offered a job by Human Resources Development Canada. These kinds of job are occupations that are really hard to find in the market. Gaining 10 points is easy on this.
• A maximum score of 10 is awarded on various combinations under adaptability.
Screening applicants through the point system is accurate and at the same time fair to all applicants. Moreover, it is obvious that one must be very qualified and can somehow contribute to the growth of the economy once applying for a visa.

If you look at it, anyone can apply for a visa as long as this individual can meet all the requirements and can get the score required for the visa. Hence, it is safe to say that people who have finished a bachelor’s degree and have been working for more than four years here in the Philippines are eligible in applying plus proof of financial evidence.

Are you applying for a visa in Australia? Is taking an English proficiency examination pose a huge dilemma?

Working, studying or living in Australia requires a visa, and you only get this visa once you have the right requirements upon lodging the application. Moreover, applying for a visa in an English speaking country requires an English proficiency examination certificate. Certain scores are required and failing to keep them gives you no chance of getting that visa. Here is a list of English proficiency examinations that are accepted in Australia.

1. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
It is a paper-based examination focused in gauging a candidate’s fluency in the English language in a social context. The candidate will need to choose between the Academic and General Training – two different modules of the IELTS examination. These two are taken by different individuals depending on their need. The test has four parts – speaking, listening, reading and writing. The speaking part is a one-on-one interview with a native English speaker; hence, not only will a candidate be assessed with how well he or she could carry a conversation, but also his or her confidence in using the language.

2. Occupational English Test (OET)
A language test for healthcare professionals, OET has been a very reliable examination that assesses the English skill of a healthcare professional who wishes to practice his field of expertise in the medical field in an English speaking country. The test is available in the following fields: dentistry, dietetics, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, speech pathology and veterinary medicine. The four language skills – reading, listening, speaking and writing – are also assessed in which topics cover in a medical and health professional setting.

The following tests will also be accepted starting November 2014.

3. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT)
A computer based examination; the TOEFL iBT evaluates the level of a candidate’s fluency using academic English. This means that topics covered in the examination are all subjects in school like sciences, music, social studies, and even art. Candidates need to have good vocabulary to ace this examination. Unlike the IELTS, the speaking exam is recorded so there is no anxiety for candidates to speak in front of a native speaker.

4. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)
This is also a computer based examination for those who want to study abroad. It also has reading, listening, speaking and writing. The test last for three hours and like the TOEFL speaking, it is recorded. The test results are available after five days from the test day.

All of these exams are challenging so be sure to review for these tests. Hit the target scores in order for your applications to be lodged without any problems.

Procedure in Rechecking Your IELTS Test Results

As what is always mentioned, people taking the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination has set scores that they need to hit. With this pressure, IELTS test candidates opt to study in an IELTS review center to be trained and taught techniques that are useful in getting that score for the IELTS. However, some fail to do this and decided to retake the examination. Whilst some choose to have their IELTS test results rechecked. How is this possible?

Within six weeks after your IELTS examination, a candidate has the option to have his or her score rechecked. This happens when a candidate feels that his or her responses could have gotten a better score. The review of results is what they call an Enquiry on Results (EOR). Here’s what the candidate should do.

First, the candidate should consult with his or her test center about the EOR form. These forms may be quite different from the other test centers and even test centers overseas. On the form, candidates are asked to fill their name, address, and the sections of the test that they want to be rechecked, place their signature and pay for the fee.

The test paper or recording will then be brought to IDP or British Council head offices. It will be rechecked by a different rater – someone who is trained to be a senior marker. Your test center then will be notified and if a new score is given, they will be giving a new Test Report Form (TRF). If the band score is really changed, your fee will be refunded.

However, candidates are made aware that speaking and writing sections are commonly rechecked. These are both subjective and having them rechecked can either get your score higher or lower. The reading and the listening are not commonly rechecked since their answers are fixed and most of the time indubitable.

Because getting a really good score in the IELTS poses a huge importance, candidates spend money and time joining in review classes for the IELTS test. Though this may be an added expenditure, it is an investment for them. Through these classes, candidates’ skills are built and improved for the examination. Moreover, they are given exercises that will enhance their understanding on the different tasks in the IELTS examination. Additionally, not only their knowledge increases, but also their confidence in using the English language. Indeed, being with an IELTS review centers is the best choice a candidate can do as preparation for the examination.
